Former two-term Plaquemines Parish President Luke Petrovich, the onetime ally of arch-segregationist Judge Leander H. Perez Sr. who later helped bring down the Perez dynasty, died Friday morning at Ochsner Foundation Hospital of organ failure after an illness. He was 74.
Petrovich orchestrated the ouster of Judge Leader Perez’s son, Chalin, from his reign over the commission-council and then helped expose the Perez family’s secret diversion of about $80 million in oil royalties from parish land into Perez-owned Delta Development Inc.
The parish filed suit against the once-invincible clan, and the Perezes eventually agreed to return more than $12 million in cash and to surrender all their oil interests in parish land.
