Info | Edward B. "Ted" Hontz is a business and community leader in the Fredericksburg region, as well as a former Navy Captain who spent 28 years serving his country and commanding ships in the Atlantic and Pacific. A combat-decorated veteran of Vietnam and the Persian Gulf War, he was awarded the Legion of Merit and the Bronze Star for Valor under fire while commanding the Aegis Cruiser USS Princeton during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.
Ted currently serves as senior systems engineer and vice president in charge of Navy programs for Basic Commerce and Industries, Inc., in Dahlgren, Va. In the 12 years since he launched BCI's Dahlgren operation, Ted has expanded his team from two to 55 employees, generating more than $9 million a year in revenues. He is an expert in ship combat systems and combat systems acquisition.
An active member of his community, Ted is vice chairman of the Stafford County Economic Development Authority and is serving his second three-year term on the Board of Directors of the Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce. In 2004, Ted co-chaired the committee that successfully lobbied to overturn The Department of Defense's Base Realignment And Closure recommendation for a 10% cut at the Dahlgren base, saving about 300 jobs.
In 2006 he helped establish and served as the first Chairman of the Board of the Chamber's Military Affairs Council, which works to preserve and expand jobs at all three bases in the Fredericksburg region: Fort A. P. Hill, Dahlgren and Quantico. Ted was an integral part of the team that won support for the University of Mary Washington's upcoming graduate school at Dahlgren. He also helped pave the way for the recent transfer of the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense Program office and its 300 defense-related jobs from Crystal City to Dahlgren.
Raised in central Pennsylvania by parents who were teachers, Ted graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1967. He subsequently earned a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) in Systems Acquisition Management from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif., and a Masters Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College in Newport, R.I., graduating with Highest Distinction. His ongoing commitment to education includes service on the Board of Directors and as Treasurer of the Germanna Community College Foundation, supporting and raising scholarship funds for students.
Despite frequent moves during his Navy career, Ted and his wife Jackie have lived and worked in Virginia for nearly 30 years, including more than a decade in the Hampton Roads area and 16 years in Stafford and King George counties. From 1985-1988, Ted lived in Fairfax, Va. and served on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations, where he worked with the Navy Office of Legislative Affairs to support and defend the Aegis program on Capitol Hill.
Ted took command of Aegis Cruiser Princeton upon the ship's commissioning in February 1989 and soon served as Local Anti-Air Warfare Commander in the Persian Gulf War. From 1991-1995, Ted was commanding officer of the Aegis Training Center in Dahlgren.
After leaving the Navy in 1995, Ted became an active member of the King George Democrats. A year later, he settled in Falmouth and subsequently joined the Stafford Democratic Committee. He and Jackie, both members of Trinity Episcopal Church in Fredericksburg, will celebrate their 39th wedding anniversary in December 2007. They have two grown daughters, Jennifer and Gretchen, as well as a son, the late Ted Hontz, Jr.
