Info | NEWTON, Willoughby, a Representative from Virginia; born at “Lee Hall,” near Hague, Westmoreland County, Va., December 2, 1802; received a liberal education from private tutors and attended the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Va.; studied law; was admitted to the bar and commenced the practice of his profession in Westmoreland County, Va.; member of the State house of delegates 1826-1832; elected as a Whig to the Twenty-eighth Congress (March 4, 1843-March 3, 1845); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1844 to the Twenty-ninth Congress; resumed the practice of his profession in Westmoreland County and also engaged in agricultural pursuits; president of the Virginia Agricultural Society in 1852; again a member of the State house of delegates 1861-1863; died at “Linden,” Westmoreland County, Va., on May 23, 1874; interment in a private cemetery on the family estate.
