Info | Lt. Col. Robert Hugh "Bob" Cunningham
Cunningham was born near Youngstown, Ohio and resides on Pawleys Island, S.C. He received a bachelor's degree from Ohio University in 1948. He served in the military from 1942 to 1947, and the diplomatic and foreign service from 1947 to 1964. He was a senior CIA officer in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Washington. Cunningham served as managing director of the Rome Daily American and as an NBC correspondent from 1964-69. He founded the Georgetown (S.C.) Journal American in 1973. In 1975, he co-founded the International Daily News of Rome. He and his wife, Nadine, have three children.
Cunningham launched his second bid to unseat Republican Sen. Strom Thurmond after switching from the GOP to the Democratic Party in early 1990. Though he faced a formidable opponent, Cunningham planned no fund-raising activities. "I don't plan to ask for anything and I won't accept any money from PACs," he said. Cunninghman said his campaign strategy was to "go to places where I was invited and spread out my ideas." If elected, he said he would push to limit consecutive congressional service to 12 years and reform the tax system. He supported greater environmental activism. "I think we're going at it in much too lukewarm a fashion. I think we should work hard to find a substitute for the internal combustion engine."
