Info | Born in Greensboro to Ruby and Vernon Jeffries, Yvonne has degrees from Bennett College and North Carolina A&T State University in psychology and Guidance and Counseling.
Her four children and seven grandchildren have not stopped her career as a public servant. Her service to the community began before her terms on the City Council. She served the city by helping found Summit House, a residential facility for women offenders, and Delancy Street, a rehabilitation program for offenders.
She has served for 24 years as Executive Director of One Step Further, Inc., a private, nonprofit United Way agency that recommends sentencing options for adults and juveniles, and provides mediation services, and life skills/conflict resolution classes. She has served on the Boards of Foster Friends, Sports Dream, Women’s Resource Center, and Malachi House, just to name a few. Yvonne has been Council Liaison to Hope IV, the Southside Project, a long term major project that transformed an area, where 100’s of people lived in high crime area to a place where the neighborhood is highly desirable and adds to our tax base. The city won a national award for the Southside Project. She has also served as Council Liaison to Greensboro Housing Development Partnership and South Elm Street Development project.
As Chair of the Bennett College for Women Board of Trustees, she has led the College through two major transitions.
With six years experience as Mayor Pro-Tem of Greensboro, Yvonne Johnson has a rich background in city governance that will stand her in good stead as mayor. She has proven herself a dedicated servant leader, one who is willing to listen to all the people, and one who is committed to a collaborative approach to problem solving. She believes in planning solutions that are based on need and common sense.
