InfoPOMEROY, Theodore Medad, a Representative from New York; born in Cayuga, N.Y., December 31, 1824; attended the common schools and Munro Collegiate Institute, Elbridge, N.Y.; was graduated from Hamilton College, Clinton, N.Y., in 1842; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1846 and commenced practice in Auburn, N.Y.; district attorney of Cayuga County 1850-1856; member of the State assembly in 1857; delegate to the Republican National Conventions in 1860 and 1876, and served as temporary chairman of the latter convention; elected as a Republican to the Thirty-seventh and to the three succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1861-March 3, 1869); chairman, Committee on Expenditures in the Post Office Department (Thirty-eighth Congress), Committee on Banking and Currency (Thirty-ninth and Fortieth Congresses); during the Fortieth Congress was elected Speaker of the House of Representatives on the last day of the session, March 3, 1869, serving one day only; declined to be a candidate for renomination in 1868; first vice president and general counsel of the American Express Co. in 1868; engaged in banking in Auburn, N.Y., after 1870; mayor of Auburn in 1875 and 1876; member of the State senate in 1878 and 1879; died in Auburn, N.Y., March 23, 1905; interment in Fort Hill Cemetery.
