Info | WHEELER, John, a Representative from New York; born in Humphreysville (now Seymour), New Haven County, Conn., February 11, 1823; attended the common schools at Cheshire, Conn.; moved to New York City in 1843 and was engaged in the hotel business with his father; became a dry-goods clerk; elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-third and Thirty-fourth Congresses (March 4, 1853-March 3, 1857); declined to be a candidate for renomination in 1856 to the Thirty-fifth Congress; commissioner and president of the Department of Taxes and Assessments of New York City 1872-1880; member of the Board of Estimates and Apportionments and commissioner of accounts of New York City; was a lawyer, but did not practice; died in New York City April 1, 1906; interment in Woodlawn Cemetery.
