Info | As a prominent Canadian CEO, entrepreneur and public servant with a noted record of success, John Gilbank is now turning his attention toward provincial politics. John is well respected within our community and has done extensive volunteer work throughout the years.
Early in his career, John worked as an international Trade Policy Officer in Ottawa, as a member of the European Community Enlargement Task Force and as a representative of Canada at GATT meetings in Geneva. Later, he became Consul and Trade Commissioner in the Western USA and First Secretary at the Canadian Embassy in Caracas, Venezuela.
After leaving the Foreign Service he climbed his way through the private sector up to President and CEO of a struggling Alberta oilfield company. There he led a turnaround team, which took the company from sales of less than $60 million per year to over $400 million and took the company public on the American and Toronto Stock Exchanges. He was awarded “Turnaround Entrepreneur of the Year” honours and named “Supplier of the Year” by Oilweek Magazine.
In late 2001, returned to his roots in small-town and rural Ontario where he became involved in various volunteer organizations such as the Rescue Lake Simcoe Coalition, Jackson’s Point Village Association and York Region Tourism Advisory Board. He is also currently the President of Benrich Investments Ltd.
John earned an Honours B.A. in political science from the University of Waterloo and later participated in Harvard’s Owner President Management Program.
He and his wife, Lynn, currently live in Jackson’s Point where they have restored a historic lakeside home to create Jackson’s Landing Bed and Breakfast. Their sons, Ben and Rich, attend University in Toronto.
John admires the McGuinty Liberals for the progress they have made in Ontario, particularly in education and protecting our natural environment. He is an outspoken advocate for Lake Simcoe and believes that the McGuinty Liberals are the only party that will ensure the environment remains high on the government’s agenda.
