Info | CLARKE, Sidney, a Representative from Kansas; born in Southbridge, Worcester County, Mass., October 16, 1831; attended the public schools; publisher of the Southbridge Press in 1854; settled in Lawrence, Kans., in 1859; enlisted as a volunteer during the Civil War; appointed assistant adjutant general of Volunteers by President Lincoln February 9, 1863; captain and assistant provost marshal general for Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, and Dakota; elected as a Republican to the Thirty-ninth, Fortieth, and Forty-first Congresses (March 4, 1865-March 3, 1871); chairman, Committee on Indian Affairs (Forty-first Congress); unsuccessful candidate in 1870 for reelection to the Forty-second Congress; member of the State house of representatives in 1879 and served as speaker; moved to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma County, Okla., in 1889 and engaged in railroad building; chairman of the statehood executive committee in 1891; member of the Territorial council 1898-1902; died in Oklahoma City, Okla., on June 18, 1909; interment in Fairlawn Cemetery.
