Info | Steve Hawley was elected to serve the 139th Assembly District on February 28, 2006. His district includes all of Orleans County; the Towns of Clarkson, Hamlin and Parma in Monroe County; the Towns of Alabama, Batavia, Bergen, Byron, Elba, Le Roy, Oakfield, Pembroke, Stafford, part of the Tonawanda Indian Reservation and the City of Batavia in Genesee County; and the Town of Somerset in Niagara County.
A Batavia native, Hawley graduated from Batavia High School and earned a B.S. in Education from the University of Toledo. He served seven years in the Ohio Army National Guard and the U. S. Army Reserves, earning the rank of 1st Lieutenant.
A small-business owner, Steve Hawley brings experience in agriculture, insurance and real estate to the Assembly. A former owner and operator of Hawley Farms, he currently owns ‘The Insurance Center’ in Batavia with his wife Crystal. He also holds a real estate license, selling residential and commercial property in the Genesee Valley region.
Committed to his community, Hawley comes to Albany with a long history of public and charitable service. He has served on the Genesee County Legislature and has served on the Board of Directors of the Genesee Community College Foundation, Genesee County Empire Zone Development Board, Genesee Center for Independent Living, Genesee County Planning Board and Genesee Valley BOCES Board of Education.
Hawley also has served on the board of the Genesee area YMCA, United Way, Cornell Cooperative Extension and the Farm Bureau. He is active in the Batavia Rotary Club, American Legion Glenn Loomis Post 332, Stafford Volunteer Fire Department, American Cancer Society and the Hugh O’Brien Youth Foundation. He also has served as chairman of the St. James Church Episcopal Community Services Campaign and coordinated the tri-county Hurricane Katrina relief effort in October 2005.
During his Assembly tenure, Assemblyman Hawley has been associated with many landmark pieces of legislation. He helped develop substantial legislation that will keep our children and families safer by preventing registered level two or three sex offenders from working in amusement parks and by requiring that certain sex offenders’ addresses be reported to the Division of Criminal Justice Services to create an added layer of protection. He authored several pieces of legislation that would assist the agricultural industry including exempting owners of farms and the owners of multiple dwellings from the scaffold law in certain instances, establishing the agricultural assistance program and extending the eligibility of the agricultural property tax credit.
Assemblyman Hawley has worked tirelessly standing up for the rights and well-being of Western New Yorkers. In 2007, Assemblyman Hawley stood against the former Governor’s plan to allow illegal immigrants to obtain New York State licenses. He collected over 10,000 signatures against the proposed plan, which was later rescinded. In 2008, Hawley was called on to help return $1 million from the Snowmobile Trail Development and Maintenance Fund. He personally spearheaded a statewide petition drive and had the monies returned to the appropriate fund.
Assemblyman Hawley is committed to veterans and their families. He currently serves as the member of the Assembly Veterans’ Affairs Committee and has sponsored meaningful legislation that will aid veterans and current service personnel. His commitment is evident by the various local veterans’ events he attends, his program Cell Phone for Soldier’s collection and his annual WWII Washington DC Patriot Trip.
Steve Hawley resides in the Town of Batavia with his wife Crystal. They are the parents of four sons, Brooks, Dan, Tim and Cooper. Hawley is the son of former Assemblyman R. Stephen Hawley and the late Ellen Hawley.
