Info | Bob Kern, the 1998 Democratic nominee for the 6th District U.S. House seat, was convicted of theft and forgery in a 1987 case and served one year of a two-year sentence. He was accused of altering a $15 paycheck from a telemarketing company and cashing it for $515. He denied altering the check. His conviction and two-year sentence were upheld upon appeal. Kern ran in the Democratic 10th District primary in 1996 under the name Bobby Scott Hidalgo Kern but lost badly in a field of nine. The name on his birth certificate is Bobby Scott Hidalgo, but he has used the name Kern at times, and the use of it during the 1998 6th District congressional election stirred some controversy. He received government disability checks under the name Bobby Hidalgo, but in January 1998, he changed his voter registration to read Bob Kern. About 14 hours later, he signed his declaration of candidacy for the 6th District U.S. House seat under the name Bob Kern.
