Info | Dr. Rand Knight is a Democratic candidate running for U.S. Senate in Georgia challenging incumbent Republican Senator Saxby Chambliss.
Rand Knight’s family is steeped in Southern history and Georgia tradition. The Knight Family history in Georgia stretches back 20 Generations and can be traced to the mid/late-1600’s in Kingsland, Georgia. On his mother’s side, Rand’s family is traced directly back to Jamestown, Virginia (Jamestowne Society and the Daughters of the American Revolution). Rand’s grandfather on his father’s side delivered milk in Glynn County and ran a butcher’s shop in Brunswick, Georgia, and several family members on the Knight side were Confederate soldiers from Georgia in the Civil War. Rand’s grandfather on his mother’s side was a Captain in the U.S. Navy, and led the engineering team that designed the moon mission launch tower. Rand’s father, Randy Knight, is a retired financial executive and a graduate of Georgia Tech; and his mother, Judy Mozen, is the President of Handcrafted Homes, a Board Member of the Atlanta Technical College and a graduate of Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia.
Franklin Randolph Knight Jr., “Rand” was born in Atlanta, Georgia at St. Joseph’s hospital on April 8, 1972. Rand Knight grew up all over Georgia from the mountains of Blue Ridge to the shores of Lake Hartwell, and from the little league parks of Smyrna to the marshes of St. Simons Island.
From 1977 – 1990, Rand received needs-based financial aid and loans to attend The Westminster Schools, an independent Christian school in Atlanta. In 1995, Rand Knight received a B.A. with Honors in Environmental Studies and graduated Cum Laude from Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vermont. In 1997, Rand received a M.S. in Ecosystems Analysis, and in 2003 he received a Ph.D. in Ecosystems Analysis, both from the University of Washington, College of Forest Resources in Seattle, Washington.
In 1991, Rand Knight started at Apple Computer, Inc. as an Account Representative and System Engineer at Middlebury College. In 1995, Rand was the Director responsible for due diligence, planning and operations in the developmental phase of a conservation-driven private development project in the Bay Islands of Honduras. In 1998, Rand worked for the U.S. Forest Service as an Ecologist responsible for identifying crucial factors affecting imminent environmental and industrial management decisions and their effects in both natural and managed forest ecosystems. Rand joined the Insightful Corporation in 2000 as a Senior Account Executive responsible for designing, implementing and managing very large data mining and statistical analysis consulting contracts to Fortune 1000 companies, such as GE Wind Energy, McGraw–Hill, Ford, Exxon-Mobil, AOL-Time Warner, Pillsbury, and state and federal governmental agencies.
From 2004 - 2006 Dr. Knight served as a Scientist for the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) and received a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the American Institute of Biological Sciences (AIBS). Dr. Knight was part of a team that worked with the National Science Foundation and Congress to develop a continental-scale research platform for discovering, understanding and predicting the impacts of climate change, land-use change, and invasive species in urban and wild ecosystems. Rand Knight is a member of the Ecological Society of America and the Society of American Foresters. Currently, Dr. Rand Knight is the Director of Enterprise Sales and Global Business Development at QL2.
Rand Knight, his wife of seven years, Linda, a Genetic Counselor at Emory University, and their daughter, Ellie Lu (2½ years Old), are expecting a baby boy in late-June, and currently live in Atlanta. Dr. Knight’s combination of professional and academic experience as a both a scientist and business executive will bring a unique and critical environmental perspective to the United States Senate.
