InfoRepresentative from New Jersey; born in Trenton, Mercer County, N.J., July 26, 1918; attended parochial and public schools and Wake Forest (N.C.) College, 1941 and the Wake Forest Law School; served in the United States Navy 1941-1948; received three combat decorations for action at Iwo Jima and Okinawa; commanded the United States Naval Reserve Battallion 4-22 and completed a seventeen-month tour of active duty, from August 1950 to January 1952, on the staff of the commander, Eastern Sea Frontier, and released from active duty January 1, 1952; was admitted to the bar in 1948 and commenced the practice of law in Trenton, N.J.; member of the State house of assembly 1950-1954, serving as assistant minority leader in 1950 and minority leader in 1954; elected as a Democrat to the Eighty-fourth Congress; reelected to the twelve succeeding Congresses and served from January 3, 1955, until his resignation December 29, 1980; chairman, Joint Committee on Printing (Ninety-fourth and Ninety-sixth Congresses), Committee on House Administration (Ninety-fourth, Ninety-fifth, and Ninety-sixth Congresses); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1980 to the Ninety-seventh Congress; was a resident of Alexandria, Va., until his death in Bethesda, Md., on July 22, 1989.
