InfoRob Quartel is a former Member of the US Federal Maritime Commission; an internationally recognized expert on US transportation policy, international maritime trade, and supply chain security; and a respected international business executive and entrepreneur. He is a long-time resident of Mathews, Virginia

In the early and mid seventies, Rob held a number of federal appointments with the EPA, Federal Energy Office, and the Presidential Clemency Board. In the early nineties Rob served as President of the US Shipbuilding Consortium and in the late nineties led a group of US companies seeking maritime trade reform.

Rob was instrumental in founding and is the CEO and Chairman of FreightDesk Technologies (www.freightdesk.com), a leading provider of internet-based supply chain security solutions for international cargo management. Rob’s clients include he US Departments of Defense, Transportation and Homeland Security, the US Food and Drug Administration as well as many national and international, private and public, organizations. Rob’s experience spans a wide range of supply chain security, energy, transportation, environmental and regulatory matters as well as a number of public-private ventures including mass transit, high-speed rail, and highway, aviation and port development projects.

Rob, a prolific writer and experienced public speaker, is frequently cited in the media and called upon for expert testimony before the Congress and other government agencies.

Following the attacks of 9/11/2001 Rob has taken the lead in identifying and solving the problem of international cargo security. He initiated the concept of “pushing the borders out” via a “virtual” electronic data border to protect the Homeland from weapons of mass destruction disguised as harmless international cargo shipments – a technology solution that allows the United States government to assess the risk of cargoes before they are shipped to the US. Rob’s expertise on trade security matters has made him a much sought after national and international trade security consultant.

He has extensive national, state, and local political experience having held responsible positions in the Ford and George H. W. Bush campaigns and administrations. In heavily Democratic Florida, Rob ran as a Republican candidate for both a House and Senate seat.

Rob’s experiences include having been a Lecturer at Yale University’s Graduate School of Management, serving a Member/Advisor to the Army Science Board on Strategic Sealift and “Army After Next” issues as well as on Intra-Theater Distribution during Operation Iraqi Freedom. He is a Life Member of the Council on Foreign Relations, a Member of the Wilson Council at the Woodrow Wilson International Center, serves on the Rice University’s Humanities Research Board as well as other technical and advisory organizations, such as, the Heritage Foundation.

He grew up in Orlando, Florida and was an Eagle Scout and a recipient of other honors and scholarships. He received his undergraduate degree in Biology from Rice University in 1973 and a Masters in Public and Private Management from Yale University. He is married to Michela English, a native of Suffolk, Virginia and graduate of both Sweet Briar College and Yale’s School of Management. Michela is formerly a senior executive at the National Geographic Society and was President of Discovery Channel’s Consumer Products Division. Today she is the President and CEO of Fight for Children, a DC-based not-for-profit organization serving educational and health care needs of low income children in the Nation’s Capital. She is on the Advisory Board at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science and numerous other boards including a Charter School in Washington, DC. The couple have two children, Eleanore (age 23) – now in her second year with Teach for America in Miami’s “Little Haiti” neighborhood; and Will (age 20), a student at the University of Miami.
