David B. Crabiel is heir to those special qualities unique to a public servant. He is a person who believes that it is his duty and his mandate to serve the community, as did his brother, parents and grandfather before him. The Crabiel family settled in what was to become Milltown, New Jersey in 1852. It is not surprising that the family name appears among the earliest Milltown records. Dave Crabiel has been fulfilling this commitment since age 16 when he became the youngest member of the Milltown Rescue Squad.
He has been in service as an elected official since 1960, when he became a Councilman. Elected Mayor of Milltown in 1967, he served 11 years before being appointed to the Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders. Elected and re-elected to this office, he served as Freeholder through 1991 and was again elected in 1993. He is currently Freeholder Director.
He is the founder of Crabiel, Inc. which operates five funeral homes in central Jersey, David Crabiel serves on as many boards and involves himself with as many organizations that ask for his help. For him, the parameters of community service are open ended. He simply serves where he is needed. Whether it is as Honorary Chairman of the Melvin H. Motolinsky Research Foundation, Honorary Co-Chair of the Middlesex County Human Relations Commission, member of the Board of Directors of the Cerebral Palsy Association, Lions and Keep Middlesex Moving, Inc., North Jersey Transportation Planning Commission, Inc., or on the Advisory Board of the Raritan Valley Workshop, David Crabiel's name and presence will be found.
Dave Crabiel was the recipient of the prestigious Charles A. Lindbergh Transportation Award given by the State of New Jersey, and also received tribute from the State of Israel and State of Israel Bonds.
A David B. Crabiel Scholarship Foundation was organized by friends in 1992 to perpetuate the leadership and dedicated spirit of Dave. A scholarship is awarded each year to a Middlesex County high school senior seeking higher education in recognition of his or her achievements.
Married to the former Mary Varga, this close family shares five children and eight grandchildren.
