InfoLouise Durfee, of Tiverton, has shown time and time again that she is dedicated to a healthy Narragansett Bay. Recently she was given the Lifetime Environmental Achievement Award by Save The Bay.

First elected to the Tiverton Town Council in 1968, Durfee led the council in a successful fight to prevent Northeast Petroleum from siting a proposed oil refinery in the town.

She was a founder of Save our Community, formed to oppose the Northeast Petroleum proposal. Save Our Community merged with the Narragansett Bay Homeowners Association of Jamestown to become Save The Bay in 1970. She served on Save The Bay's Board for nearly a decade was elected President of Save The Bay in 1976.

After chairing then Governor Garrahy's task force to address the Sewer Facilities in the upper Providence River, Durfee served as the first General Counsel for the Narragansett Bay Commission and led the effort to establish the Commission's control of the sewage facilities in Providence, North Providence and other communities - greatly improving sewage treatment for the region.

Later, Durfee served as Director of the Department of Environmental Management, where she made important strides for Narragansett Bay, including establishing the Greenwich Bay Initiative, creating the state's hazardous waste site remediation regulations, vastly improving wetlands protection and doubling the size of the Narragansett Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve.

She gained a reputation at DEM as a tough minded civil servant who would make the politically unpopular decisions that were necessary to protect Rhode Island's environment.

Durfee is currently a partner at Brown Rudnick Berlack Israels. She serves on Rhode Island Advisory Board of the Conservation Law Foundation and privately advises Save The Bay on matters pertaining to environmental law.
