Info | BROWN, Freeland Simpson - called colloquially "Freely" but who formally called himself F.S. Brown. Storekeeper and Democratic Party activist.
Born in Bart Township, Lancaster Co., Pa., on New Year's Day of 1857; son of William J. & Martha Brown.
Parents moved to Chester County in 1866 and opened a store in Cochranville. F.S. Brown purchased the store from his parents in 1884. Two years later, he initiated a cash-only policy (no credit tabs), which allowed him to reduce prices and undersell local competition. His store quickly became the largest in the immediate area. The store had 20,000 square feet of display area when he sold it in 1918.
Postmaster of Cochranville during the Cleveland Administration.
Married Elida C,. Snodgrass; one son.
Presbyterian.
Relocated to West Chester in 1921, and died in his house at 636 South Walnut Street on 7/27/1939.
