Info | Michael Chan was just 18-years-old when he came to Toronto from Hong Kong. Leaving behind his parents, two sisters and a brother, he left his home in search of better opportunities. With no family in Canada, Michael was on his own.
In the mid-80s Michael met John Roberts, then environment minister for Pierre Trudeau’s Liberal government. Michael worked on Roberts’ campaign, helping him to connect with the Chinese community. Inspired by Roberts’ education and motivation to help his community, Michael tucked away in his mind his first political aspirations.
His involvement in Liberal politics continued throughout a lengthy career in the insurance industry that began in 1975. By the early 90s he was an established executive in the insurance industry.
In 1992, Michael opened his own insurance brokerage in Markham, the York Alliance Insurance Brokers / Financial Depot. His company started with two staff members and blossomed into a profitable business that now employs 30 staff and hundreds of agents.
It was through his work that Michael became familiar with Markham and was inspired to volunteer in his community.
He is a current member of the Markham Board of Trade and the Canadian Chinese Insurance Professionals Association. He is Honorary President of the Toronto Chinese Senior Health & Recreation Association and has been a past member of the Province of Ontario Medal for Police Bravery Advisory Council and the Toronto Ngun Lam Athletic Association. Michael is also an active participant in John McCallum’s annual food drive, in support of the Markham Food Bank.
Michael has been serving as the President of Markham-Unionville Federal Liberal Association since 2000. He held executive positions for several other riding associations in the 80s and 90s, including the Ontario Chinese Liberal Association.
Married to Elaine in 1987, the Chans have two sons, Alex, 16, and Brian 17.
Now that his sons are older and in school, Michael feels it is the right time to run for the position as MPP in Markham.
