Info | MONAGHAN, Robert Jones - Attorney in West Chester PA
Born in Parkesburg PA. Eldest son of Jonathan J. & Rebecca Monaghan, who moved to Pettis Co., MO early in his life.
Sedalia High School, Pettis Co., MO
Returned to Chester County PA in 1869 and entered law practice with his uncle, R.E. Monaghan. Admitted to the bar, 1873 and had a highly successful practice.
Suffered from depression following a break in his mental health in 1891. He disappeared, and early the following year he was discovered in Australia. West Chester PA Democrats raised funds to have him returned home.
After another unscheduled trip (this time to California), Mongahan was placed in an insane asylum but escaped.
Committed suicide in the Ridgeway House at the intersection of Market Street and Delaware Avenue, Philadelphia. Monaghan registered under a false name; he attached a hose to a gas valve and asphyxiated himself.
