Info | HOPKINS, James Herron, a Representative from Pennsylvania; born in Washington, Washington County, Pa., November 3, 1832; attended the common schools and was graduated from Washington College (now Washington and Jefferson University), Washington, Pa., in 1850; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1852 and practiced in Pittsburgh, Pa., for twenty years; also engaged in banking, manufacturing, and mining; for several years vice president of the Pittsburgh chamber of commerce; unsuccessful candidate for election in 1872 to the Forty-third Congress; elected as a Democrat to the Forty-fourth Congress (March 4, 1875-March 3, 1877); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1876 to the Forty-fifth Congress; elected to the Forty-eighth Congress (March 4, 1883-March 3, 1885); chairman, Committee on Labor (Forty-eighth Congress); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1884 to the Forty-ninth Congress; engaged in the practice of law in Washington, D.C.; died at his summer home at North Hatley, Quebec, Canada, June 17, 1904; interment in Oak Hill Cemetery, Washington, D.C.
