Info | Larry Jack EchoHawk is professor of law in Brigham Young University's J. Reuben Clark Law School, where he teaches criminal law and criminal procedure. In 1991, he became Idaho's 30th Attorney General and was the first American Indian in U.S. history to be elected as a State attorney general. He was vice-chairman of the Idaho Commission for Children and Youth from 1989 to 1990. In 1986, he began the first of two terms as prosecuting attorney for Bannock County, where he was responsible for all juvenile cases in Idaho's fourth largest county. From 1982 to 1986, he served two terms in the Idaho House of Representatives. From 1977 to 1985, he was named chief general counsel to the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes at the Fort Hall Indian Reservation in Idaho. He began his career as a legal services attorney working for American Indian people in California, then opened a private law office in Salt Lake City.
Professor EchoHawk was honored in 1995 as the first BYU graduate to receive the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Silver Anniversary Award, given to athletes who completed college 25 years ago and who have led distinguished careers. Children's Voices, Inc. honored him as Children's Advocate of the Year in 1994. In 1991, he received George Washington University's Martin Luther King medal for his work in human rights. As the chair of Idaho's delegation to the Democratic National Convention, he was the first American Indian to lead a State delegation to the convention. For his work in the Idaho legislature, Professor EchoHawk received Phi Delta Kappa's Friend of Education award. He is a member of the Pawnee Indian Tribe and has served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He earned a bachelor's degree from Brigham Young University in 1970, a juris doctor degree from the University of Utah in 1973, and undertook graduate studies in business at Stanford University.
