Info | Denis Rocan was born on February 14, 1949 in Somerset, Manitoba to French Canadian parents and spent his early years in the north end of Winnipeg, returning to Somerset at the age of twelve. He is bilingual and received his education at Sacre Coeur in Winnipeg, Somerset Collegiate and Otterburne College.
Denis Rocan worked in supervisory positions with Inco in Thompson and Eatons in Winnipeg, returning home to run a grain farm near Baldur. For a number of years Mr. Rocan also owned and operated both a building moving company and a grain fertilizer hauling business. He still maintains the original family home in Somerset and spends as much time as possible in the scenic valleys, sprawling farm fields and jutted woods of the Gladstone and Carman constituencies.
Denis Rocan was first elected to the Legislature in 1986, as the MLA for Turtle Mountain. After the boundary commission redrew the electoral boundaries, Mr. Rocan ran successfully for re-election in the constituency of Gladstone (now Carman) in 1990. He is well known for having served as Speaker of the Manitoba Legislature from 1988 to 1995, earning and maintaining the praise of all political parties. Mr. Rocan makes a point of speaking out in the interest of his constituents and is always there to act as a facilitator and agent of influence in provincial affairs. He represents an immense and diverse rural constituency and knows the majority of his constituents by name.
In government, Denis is an active committee member, serving on the Public Accounts Committee, the Statutory Regulations and Orders Committee and the Public Utilities and Natural Resources Committee. He also serves on the AIPLF (lAssociation Internationale des Parliamentaires de Langues Francais), is the past Executive Director of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, as well as being one of the founding members of the Canada/US Midwestern Legislative States Council. He has been a member of the Lions Club, is an active Shriner and Mason and is also an associate member of the Royal Canadian Legion.
On a personal side, Mr. Rocans quick wit and easy-going personality instantly light up a room and his humour is contagious. Mr. Rocan has always been active in the community and is an avid golfer, curler, and hunter.
Denis has two grown children, Shaun and Shian, and is the proud grandfather of Kjirstiana, Joshua Tyler, Ryan and Dilan.
