Info | The Honourable Dr. Fenton Ferguson assumed responsibility for the Ministry of Labour and Social Security in November 2015.
Previously he served the nation as Jamaica’s 11th Minister of Health.
Dr. Ferguson, a dental surgeon for over 33 years in the parish of St. Thomas, was the head Dental Surgeon in charge of the Ministry of Health’s Dental Health Services in St. Thomas from 1978 to 1993.
He was educated at Ardenne High School in Kingston and Howard University in the USA, where he made the Dean’s Honor role for three consecutive years while pursuing his Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry in 1974. He also gained a post-graduate degree in 1978 which made him a Doctor of Dental Surgery.
Dr. Ferguson was invited to enter representational politics in 1989 and in 1993 he was elected Member of Parliament for St. Thomas Eastern. He has held that seat over five consecutive General Elections, making him the longest serving MP for that constituency.
Dr. Ferguson has held several Government positions over the 19 years, namely:
Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Youth and Culture (1995-1998)
Minister of State in the Ministry of Agriculture (1998-2002)
Minister of State with responsibility for Works in the Ministry of Transport and Works (2002-2006)
Minister of State with responsibility for Water in the Ministry of Housing Transport Water and Works (2006-2007)
He has also served in several other capacities including the Chairman of the Human Resources and Social Development Committee of Parliament, Member of the National Honours and Awards Committee, and Member of the Sub-committee of Cabinet on Infrastructure.
His contribution to the political arena includes Vice President and Officer of the People’s National Party, former Regional Chairman, and member of the Executive Committee of the Party. In 1996, he also reorganized the Party’s Youth Organisation, PNP-YO.
Dr. Ferguson continues to make a substantial contribution to society as an Honorary Member of the Lions’ Club of Portmore and Chairman of the Saunders Basic School for the past 31 years.
