InfoThe Honourable Derrick Kellier has had significant experience and a distinguished record of service in Government, and is the recipient of the award of the Order of Distinction in the rank of Commander (CD) which was conferred in 2009.

Before his assignment as Minister of Labour and Social Security in January 2012, he was Leader of Opposition Business in the House of Representatives and Shadow Portfolio Minister for the Ministry of Labour & Social Security.

Mr. Kellier assumed the portfolio of Agriculture and Fisheries was added in October 2014 when the sitting minister, the Hon. Roger Clarke passed away.

In November 2015, Mr. Kellier’s ministerial duties were streamlined to focus on the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries.

He has been a Minister of State in the Ministry of National Security, with special responsibility for Parliamentary Affairs, as well as Deputy Leader of Government Business in the House of Representatives.

Before taking up those duties, in October 2002 he was a Minister of State in the Office of the Prime Minster (OPM). His duties under this portfolio involved co-ordinating the preparation and execution of the National Youth Service (NYS) Programme, the Sugar Lands Divestment Programme, Labour Day Projects, the Venezuelan Investment Fund Projects; and activities surrounding the Urban Development Corporation and Operation PRIDE. He was also Chairman of the Greater Portmore Task Force.

As Minister of State in the OPM, the Honourable Derrick Kellier was also in charge of the Western Regional Office of the Prime Minister with a mandate to coordinate all Government programmes, Ministries and Agencies in the western region.

He also served as Minister of State in the Ministry of Local Government, Youth and Sports, in which capacity he coordinated the development of a National Youth Policy, among other responsibilities.

Between 1989 and 1995, Minister Kellier was Parliamentary Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Education and Culture, where he was responsible for Capital Projects, the maintenance of schools, the School Feeding Programme, Teachers’ Housing, Primary and Early Childhood Education.

Throughout this period, he was also assigned to the Ministry of Local Government, Youth and Community Development, where he was in charge of Youth Affairs and Children Services.

He was National Chairman of the People’s National Party (PNP) Youth Organisation and Chairman of PNP Region Six. Currently, he is a Member of the National Executive Council (NEC) and a Vice-President of the PNP.

Mr. Kellier is a businessman and a farmer. He has been Member of Parliament for Southern St. James since February 1989.

He was educated at Roehampton Primary School in St. James and Calabar High School in St. Andrew.

He is a member of the Jamaica Agricultural Society (JAS) and previously held leadership position as President of the St. James Senior Members’ Council Youth Club Association, Chairman of the Youth Action Movement, and President of the National Union of Young Farmers.

Minister Kellier is married and has five daughters.
