| Info | Before his parliamentary career, Michel Bissonnet worked for the city of Montréal from 1960 to 1977. Aside from his work, Michel Bissonnet took adult education courses and obtained a diploma of college of studies in 1973. He then enrolled in the law faculty of the Université de Montréal, where he graduated with a law degree in 1976. The following year, he was admitted to the Barreau du Québec and went on to practise law in the Saint-Léonard firm of Bissonnet, Mercadente et associés.
From 1978 to 1981, he was mayor of Saint-Léonard.
Elected for the first time in 1981 as the Québec Liberal Party Member for Jeanne-Mance, he was re-elected in the same riding in the general elections of 1985, 1989, 1994, 1998 and 2003 (the riding is now known as Jeanne-Mance-Viger).
Over the course of his parliamentary career, Michel Bissonnet has been in turn Official Opposition critic for communications, for consumer protection and for access to information and responsible for taxi industry matters. He was a member of the Office of the National Assembly and the chair of the Québec Liberal Party caucus from 1985 to 1989.
In 1989, Michel Bissonnet was elected Vice-President of the National Assembly, a position he held until 1994. He then acted as the Assistant Official Opposition Whip until April 1997, when he became vice-chair of the Committee on Transportation and the Environment.
On March 2, 1999, Michel Bissonnet was elected Third Vice-President of the National Assembly. He was the first to hold this newly created position reserved for a Member sitting in the Official Opposition.
On June 4, 2003, he was elected President of the National Assembly.
Michel Bissonnet was born in Montréal on March 28, 1942. He is married and has two children.
