InfoMy name is Joe Serra and I am running for Congress in the Illinois 14th District.

I was born on the South Side of Chicago and moved to Saint Charles, IL when I was 10 years old. Back then, Saint Charles was still just a farming community. We grew up in the country, there were farms all around us everywhere and as far as you could see there was corn and soybeans. Most of my friends were all farmers, farming the same family farm that their great-great-grandfathers farmed. Now those farms are gone and the fields have all turned to homes, shopping centers, malls and roads.

I spent my summers on a farm in Kentucky with friends of our family, learning to ride horses, work with cattle, grow tobacco, bail hay all of the usual things you would do on a farm. I'll never forget my time on the farm, it was one of the most rewarding and wonderful times I had as a youth.

I was always a liberal, always on the side of the underdog. I remember the riots in Chicago and the death Dr. King - one of my hero's and one of the GREATEST AMERICANS that has ever lived. I was very aware that what he was doing was good and that it was for the good of ALL America.

While in high school, I was on the wrestling team and track team (pole vault). During my senior year, I was recruited to join the swim team. That year (1979), Saint Charles High School won their first state swimming title. I was, and remain, very proud of being associated with that team.

After graduating high school, I went to the University of Wisconsin River Falls for a year. I left college for a year to work and In 1981, I began to attend classes at Illinois College in Jacksonville, IL - a distinguished college with an excellent record of achievement. I.C. is the college that William Jennings Bryant graduated from, as well as John Wesley Powel. I joined the Phi Alpha literary society, which has the honor of having hosted many events for Abraham Lincoln, as well as including him as a member prior to becoming President, and it is also rumored to have sponsored debates between Lincoln and Douglas. I was very active on campus and was elected to the student government for four years running, including Senior Class Vice President in 1986, the year I graduated.

In the last few elections, I have been very vocal regarding the lack of Democratic candidates in the county, district, and state. Rather than be a hypocrite, I decided it was time for me to put my thoughts and ideals into action.

This is an entirely new field for me - I've spent most of my career in sales and sales engineering with the telecommunications industry. I have recently started renewable energy company which is in the process of getting off the ground.

I'm a life-long fighter for what is good and what is right, and I want to continue that FIGHT in the State House. There are many issues which I think need to come to the forefront of the American debate.

We can change politics in Illinois and we can change America. Let me know how you would like to help out.
