Important legislation sponsored by Councillor Yancey, who served as President of the Boston City Council in 2001 and who served as President of the National Black Caucus of local Elected Officials in 1999, includes the famous South Africa Divestment bill, the School Bus Crossing Arm Ordinance and the Parental School Leave ordinance, which allows parents to visit their child’s school without jeopardizing their employment or benefits. Yancey successfully sponsored anti-smoking legislation and orders calling for the construction of police stations in Mattapan and Hyde Park, a $57 million loan-order to build a high school in Mattapan, a City Hall statue honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the establishment of a Sister City relationship between Boston and Sekondi-Takoradi, Ghana. Yancey’s recent bills call for mandatory use of bulletproof vests by Boston Police Officers and the use of carbon monoxide detectors in the City of Boston.
