(son of former Representative Thomas Andrew Luken)
Charlie Luken is the current Mayor of the City of Cincinnati. Mr. Luken has been one of the most visible and popular leaders in the Greater Cincinnati region since his initial term as a member of Cincinnati City Council beginning in 1981.
Mr. Luken originally began his career practicing law in 1976, quickly moving into public service. He completed his first term with Cincinnati City Council in 1984, at which time he was elected Mayor of the City of Cincinnati, a position he held until 1990. In 1990, Mr. Luken was elected to the United States Congress.
In 1999, Mr. Luken was called back to public service and elected Mayor, once again, of the City of Cincinnati. Mr. Luken was re-elected in 2001, as the first directly elected Mayor of Cincinnati since 1926. During his past three years, the Mayor has focused on major economic development projects, including the Convention Center, the Banks, and Empowerment Zone development.
In January 2001, in his state of the city address, Mayor Luken identified race relations as the number one issue of importance in Cincinnati. He has worked tirelessly to better Cincinnati's police/community relations through his involvement with the Cincinnati Collaborative, a process that involved over 3,500 city residents, police representatives, and civic leaders. The process is fast becoming a model for cities across the Country. In addition, Mayor Luken serves on the Social and Criminal Justice Committee of the U.S. Conference of Mayors.
Mr. Luken was founder of Cincinnati's international sister city Gifu, Japan and the Smale Commission on Infrastructure. He serves on numerous boards including the University of Cincinnati Board of Visitors, the Cincinnati Art Museum, and the Ohio Kentucky Indiana Regional Counsel of Governments.
