Merle Johnson is a lifelong resident of Ankeny, and a graduate of Simpson College in Indianola, where he earned his BA in Business. In 1962 Merle purchased Ankeny Tire & Battery, which he owned and operated for 43 years before turning the day-to-day operations over to his son, Jeff, and nephew, Tony.

Merle and Susan are members of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Ankeny.
