Info | Frank Murphy was born and raised in Delaware. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Delaware, with high honors, in 1974, and was awarded his Doctorate of Laws Degree by the Dickinson School of Law in 1977. He passed the Delaware Bar examination and was admitted to the Bar of the Delaware Supreme Court in November 1977. Following a clerkship in the Delaware Superior Court, he entered private practice. In 1992, Frank helped found the law firm of Murphy Spadaro & Landon. His career has focused primarily on civil litigation.
Frank has sought to balance the demands of private practice with his desire to engage in public service. While working a fulltime schedule in his law practice, he served as counsel to the State House of Representatives in 1985 and the Delaware State Senate from 1987-9 and 1999-2006. As a Senate attorney, Frank drafted and reviewed hundreds of bills that were passed into law by the General Assembly. He also provided legal opinions on the implications of legislation and on issues under the U.S. and Delaware Constitutions. During this period, Frank worked closely with elected officials of both parties.
Frank’s work for the Senate brought him tremendous personal rewards, because there he met his wife and best friend, Brigitte Conner Murphy. In 2003, Brigitte brought Frank’s fifty years of bachelorhood to a welcome end. And more dividends followed with the birth of their son, Francis J. Murphy III, on October 2, 2005.
Frank is a life-long Democrat. He is the Chair of the 10th Representative District, and has lived in his present home for fourteen years. He also serves on the Delaware Democratic Party’s Rules Committee.
Frank has devoted time to community organizations and charitable causes. He served as President of the Board of the Community Legal Aid Society, and as a member of the Board of the Latin American Community Center. Frank is a volunteer attorney for the Office of the Child Advocate, and was a Big Brother for Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Delaware. He is a supporter of the Sierra Club, the Nature Conservancy, and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. And Frank has sponsored several young children in Uganda through the Christian Children’s Fund, contributing to their education and promoting the welfare of their villages.
