Info | Mike grew up spending most of May through September working in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area where his family operated a canoe outfitting business. After graduating from Rochester Mayo, he received a B.A. in International Relations with a Political Science major from Hamline University.
Mike has been a hard and determined worker since a young child and has a very strong work ethic. He has experience in an array of professions from bar tender to house cleaner, canoe outfitter to house page/committee assistant, marketing and administration work to fitness club child care associate, litigation support and paralegal work to research analyst, etc. Mike knows and understands what it is to put in a full day’s hard work. He’s not afraid to roll up his sleeves, get his hands dirty and to do what it takes to get a job finished properly. Since 1998 Mike has fulfilled all the duties of a stay-at-home dad: nurse, teacher, chauffeur, mediator, chef, entertainer, etc. He has been a school volunteer since 1995 starting with Bridge to School through Southview’s First Grade Books program continuing to Westview’s Leap to Literacy tutoring program as well as tutoring and classroom volunteering in both grade schools. Mike has also been a VAA community sports volunteer coach since 1997 – soccer, baseball and volleyball.
Mike has been a community and political activist and organizer since 1982. He has worked with Clean Water Action, Minnesota Interest Public Research Group (MPIRG), Association of Community Organization for Reform Now (ACORN - fair housing coalition), Affirm (citizen rights), Blue-Green Alliance (labor/environmental issues), and others. Mike is a citizen lobbyist for Transit for Livable Communities (TLC) and is a member of Westview’s Family Support Committee. In addition, Mike is outgoing Vice President and co-founder of Minnesota Network for Progressive Action (mnpACT! - an organization committed to progressive ideals), is Vice President of the Financial Services Policy Institute (a virtual think tank focusing on financial market issues), and is Associate Chair of DFL SD37.
Mike has lived in Apple Valley with his wife (Kathy), three children (Amanda, Sam and Kayla), and cat (Simon) since 1995 and has been an active member of our community. He is an avid speed reader, historian, and an information junkie. In his leisure, Mike enjoys playing guitar, hiking, canoe trips, and camping with his family on the North Shore and in the BWCA.
All of Mike’s life experiences have prepared him to be SD37’s best representation in the State Senate. Mike’s work, activism, and volunteerism, his family’s health issues, raising a family on a secretary’s income, etc. all have trained him and qualify him to represent SD37 in the State Senate. Mike talks with and listens to people daily in gas stations, grocery stores, our schools and our parks. He knows and understands what is important to us individually, to our families, and to our community. Mike has the same concerns, hopes and dreams for his family and for our community.
