Info | My Family:
I am a fourth generation Minnesotan. I was born in St. Cloud, the oldest of 10 children to Adrian Sluss (from the Buckman area) and Mildred Sluss-Esplan (from the Cold Spring area). I have two children, Brian and Shelly Nicole. I have two grandchildren, Brittany and Timothy.
Education:
I graduated from Cathedral High School in St. Cloud and joined the U.S. Air Force. In the military, received intensive training for a year in electronics communication and served 4 years during the Viet Nam conflict. After honorable discharge, I received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education from St. Cloud State University. I began teaching at St. Cloud State in 1975, and have since taught at Cherry Creek Schools in Denver, CO, Mohave Valley Schools in Arizona, and for the past 14 years in the Brainerd School District. In 2000, I received a Master of Science degree in Special Education licensed in Emotional/ Behavioral Disorders. I currently hold licensure in education for grades K-12 including Special Education and all subject matter. I work with adolescents in an alternative program for students who have been placed out-of-home at PORT Group Homes for Boys and Girls. I am certified as a presenter for the Yellow Ribbon Suicide prevention program as well as having completed Drug Court training from the Department of Justice.
Professional Experience:
I've taught every grade in public education from Kindergarten through 12th grade, beginning in 1975 and continuing through today. During the late 1970's I served as the marketing director for The Computer Connection, a wholly owned subsidiary of Volkswagen, International. I authored an accounting training book and computer software which was used by Pepperdine University, CA in their MBA program. I was first elected to the Crow Wing County Board in 1996 and have been re-elected three times entering my 10th year of public service. In that capacity, I have served as the County Methamphetamine Prevention Coordinator (voluntary) from 2004 through early 2005. I presently serve as the Interim Emergency Manager (voluntary) pending the appointment of a full time manager sometime in 2006. During that time I have served on: Association of Minnesota Counties delegation and served for 6 years on the Health and Human Services policy committee; Insurance benefits committee; Board of Health; MN Board of Health (alternate); Building and Grounds Committee; Central MN Community Corrections Board and Executive Committee; Crow Wing County Business Council; Soil and Water Conservation Appeals Board; Disaster Plan Committee; Enhanced 911 Committee; Extension Committee; Family Services Collaborative; Geographic Information Committee; Highway Advisory Committee; Organizational Structure/Essential Services Committee; Planning Commission; Thirty Lakes Joint Powers Board; Tobacco License Committee; Unorganized Territory Board; TCC Board of Directors and the Methamphetamine Prevention Committee. In addition, I serve on the MN Meth Task Force, Crow Wing County Drug Court Committee (evaluator) and the Supreme Court Chemical Dependency Task Force.
