Bob was born on March 1, 1951 and was raised on a dairy farm in Faribault, MN. After High School, he went on to Bemidji State University where he met and married Colleen, in 1972. Bob graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Physical Education in May of 1973 and got his first (and last) teaching and coaching job in Forest Lake, Minnesota, where he has taught ever since.
Bob and Colleen have raised three children - two sons and a daughter. Their twin sons graduated from Forest Lake High School and went on to receive and accept appointments to the United States Military Academy at West Point. Graduating as 2nd Lieutenants with the class of 2000, the men are now Captains in the armed forces. Both have served overseas in Iraq. One is returning in August for a 2nd tour as Company Commander. Daughter, Krystle, is a senior at Bethel University in St. Paul studying to be a teacher.
Professional:
Bob has been Head Wrestling Coach at Forest Lake High School since 1975. Under his leadership, the teams have accumulated a 361-134-2 record. This record ranks Bob as 17th out of 256 high school wrestling coaches in Minnesota.
Bob has received numerous awards as an athlete and as a coach, including: NAIA National Wrestling Champion, NAIA Hall of Fame, Bemidji State Hall of Fame, National Wrestling Hall of Fame and both High School and College "Athlete of the Year" awards.
Bob’s career has provided him the opportunity to help 14 students achieve the title “Individual State Champion". 62 of his students were Individual State Place Winners and 111 Individual State Participants. Other highlights include: a State Team Championship and one 4th and 5th place finish.
Military Service:
Bob currently serves as a Chief Warrant Officer (CW3) in the U. S. Army Reserves. Besides being an Intelligence Officer, he is also an Army Master Fitness Trainer for soldiers, and has instructed numerous Army Military Courses.
In November, 2001, Bob was called to Active Duty to support "Operation Enduring Freedom" and "Operation Iraqi Freedom." A One year stint ended up turning into almost 2 years, with Dettmer serving at Fort Gordon, Georgia, and then in Kuwait where he was shipped just prior to the beginning of war.
