| Info | Fruto Chamorro Pérez (October 20, 1804 March 12, 1855) was President of Nicaragua 1853-1855.
Chamorro was born in Guatemala and was sent to Nicaragua by his father as a child. He joined the Nicaraguan army and rose to the rank of general. He was elected supreme director of the state of Nicaragua in 1853. Though a member of the conservative faction, he made a coalition government consisting of conservatives and liberals, and invited the liberals to help develop a new constitution. This ended in November 1853 when the liberals conspired against the government. Chamorro and the conservatives finished the constitution, which made Nicaragua into a Republic. Chamorro was elected President in 1854, but the liberals set up a rival government and a civil war started. Neither the liberals nor the conservatives had great tactical skills, and neither group seemed to be winning. Chamorro was almost captured once and almost shot accidentally by his own troops once. By early 1855, however, the Chamorro government had captured some important areas from the liberals. However, while the war was still going on, Chamorro died of an illness at his hacienda outside the city of Granada, Nicaragua.
