High School; was graduated from Tusculum (Tenn.) College in 1893; member of the State house of representatives 1895-1897; studied law at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tenn.; was admitted to the bar in 1896 and commenced practice in Greeneville, Tenn.; also engaged in banking, serving as president of a local bank 1912-1918; served as attorney general of the first judicial circuit of Tennessee 1918-1926; trustee of Tusculum College; elected as a Republican to the Seventy-second Congress (March 4, 1931-March 3, 1933); unsuccessful candidate for renomination and for reelection as an Independent candidate in 1932; continued the practice of law in Greeneville, Tenn., until his death there on July 6, 1934; interment in Oak Grove Cemetery.
