Info | HITCHCOCK, Phineas Warren, (father of Gilbert Monell Hitchcock), a Delegate and a Senator from Nebraska; born in New Lebanon, Columbia County, N.Y., November 30, 1831; graduated from Williams College, Massachusetts, in 1855; studied law; moved to Omaha, Nebr., in 1857; admitted to the bar and commenced practice; appointed United States marshal 1861-1864; elected as a Republican Delegate to the Thirty-ninth Congress and served from March 4, 1865, to March 1, 1867, when the Territory was admitted as a State into the Union; appointed surveyor general of Nebraska and Iowa 1867-1869; elected as a Republican to the United States Senate and served from March 4, 1871, to March 3, 1877; unsuccessful candidate for reelection; chairman, Committee on Territories (Forty-fourth Congress); involved in newspaper publishing and various businesses; died in Omaha, Nebr., July 10, 1881; interment in Prospect Hill Cemetery.
