InfoAs one of the few former Fortune 500 business executives in Congress, Congressman Pete Hoekstra brings a unique blend of experience and perspective as he represents Michigans Second Congressional District in Washington.

On November 5, 2002, Pete was elected to his sixth term as representative of the Second District, which covers all or part of 11 counties in western Michigan along the Lake Michigan shoreline. Pete was originally elected to the 103rd Congress in 1992, when he defeated 26-year-incumbent Guy VanderJagt in a primary election. He then served a key role in the development of the Contract with America, which was instrumental in gaining a Republican majority in the U.S. House of Representatives for the first time in 40 years. Pete is a member of several task forces and caucuses, including the Historically Black College and Universities Task Force, Education Reform Caucus, Republican Study Committee, Congressional Pro-Life Caucus and the Bipartisan Congressional Bike Caucus.

In the 108th Congress, Pete serves on three committees the Education and the Workforce Committee, the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and the Select Committee on Intelligence. He has served on the Education and the Workforce Committee since joining Congress in 1993 and will chair the committees Subcommittee on Select Education during the 108th Congress. Pete served as chairman of the panels Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations in the 104th, 105th and 106th Congresses and authored a variety of studies and reports, including Education at a Crossroads, Crossroads 2000 and the American Worker Project. The subcommittee also performed many investigations, including looks into the financial failures at the Department of Education, the corrupted 1996 Teamsters election, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Corporation for National Service (AmeriCorps).

Pete was named by House Speaker Dennis Hastert to the Select Committee on Intelligence for the first time in 2001. As a member of this committee, Pete has the responsibility to be informed about a variety of sensitive issues relating to the security of the United States.

Pete has been featured in a variety of media, including appearances on C-SPANs Washington Journal, NBCs Dateline, PBSs News Hour, ABCs Nightline, Fox News Channels OReilly Factor and John McLaughlins nationally syndicated One-on-One, as well as NPRs Talk of the Nation and the Michael Reagan Show on radio. He also has written pieces published in The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, The Washington Times, The Detroit News and the Detroit Free Press, among others. Pete also delivered the national Republican Radio Address on August 30, 1997.

For his work in Congress, Pete has won numerous awards, including the "Public Official of the Year" Award for 2000 from Habitat for Humanity of Michigan, the "Taxpayer Superhero" Award from the Council for Citizens Against Government Waste and the "Faith, Family and Freedom" Award from the Family Research Council.

Pete is a graduate of Holland Christian Schools, holds a bachelors degree in political science from Hope College in Holland and holds a masters of Business Administration from the University of Michigan. Prior to his election to Congress, he worked for 15 years at Zeeland, Mich.-based office furniture manufacturer Herman Miller Inc., where he held the title of Vice President of Marketing.

Pete lives in Holland, Michigan, with his wife, Diane, and their three children, Erin, Allison and Bryan. He was born on Oct. 30, 1953, in Groningen, the Netherlands, and immigrated to Michigan with his family at the age of 3, making him one of the few members of Congress who were not born in the United States.
