Info | Congresswoman Morella graduated with a B.A. from Boston University in 1954. After moving to Maryland, she received her M.A. in English from American University, and taught for fifteen years at Montgomery College in Rockville, Maryland. After participating in a variety of community organizations, Morella formally entered politics in 1979 as a member of the Maryland General Assembly where she served until 1987. In her initial bid for the Republican nomination to the House of Representatives, she lost to former Congressman Newton Steers, Jr. In 1986 Morella won the Republican nomination and defeated the Democratic candidate for the seat left open by Michael Barnes' unsuccessful Senate bid.
During her terms in Congress, Morella has emphasized issues such as federal pay, parental leave, and health care. Among her legislative proposals is a program to encourage people to join the Peace Corps by providing college scholarships in return for three years of Peace Corps service.
In 2002, she lost her re-election bid to Christopher Van Hollen.
