Info | Political Consultant & Ex-Journalist
Scot Ross has spent the past decade working to promote progressive ideas in Wisconsin. He has dedicated his professional life to helping government work for people, and has used his skills as a journalist, researcher, political and communications expert to lead the fight for Democratic causes.
Scot grew up in the shadows of the steel mills which were once the engine driving America’s economy. His father worked in the mills and his mother was a teacher and union member. In the 1980s, when the steel industry collapsed, Scot’s family endured the unemployment and hardships so many families suffered in the wake of trickle-down economics.
Scot learned the lessons of hard work from his parents and grandparents. Scot’s family is made up of farmers, teachers, door-to-door salesmen, cafeteria workers. His brother helps veterans navigate through the federal bureaucracy to get the health benefits they’ve earned.
Scot Ross will put all of his practical and life experiences to work building for Wisconsin’s future and helping organize progressive leaders in every corner of the state. Scot believes, as you do, an effective government serves its constituents first and foremost. Scot will reinvigorate the Wisconsin Office of Secretary of State, bringing enthusiastic and energetic leadership.
Scot got his first professional job as a reporter at age 18, covering all branches of local government. From there, he worked as a journalist and editor and his stories have appeared in publications such as the Pittsburgh Press and The New York Times. From there, Scot worked for a public-service nonprofit which encourages the fair taxation and challenges “lawmakers, policymakers, and administrators to take into account the rights and concerns of all taxpayers, not just special interests.”
Scot has served as communications director on a number of statewide Wisconsin campaigns such as the successful campaign of Wisconsin’s first woman Attorney General Peg Lautenschlager and the gubernatorial campaign of Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk.
Scot has managed a number of top-targeted state legislative races. He has served as the communications director for U.S. Representative Ron Kind and in a similar position for the Attorney General and the Wisconsin Department of Justice. Scot also worked in the Wisconsin State Senate and Assembly in a variety of roles.
In the 2004 election cycle, Scot served as Research Director of America Coming Together, a group dedicated to registering and mobilizing voters to elect progressives up and down the ticket in Wisconsin and other battleground states across the country. Most recently, he was the Democratic Party of Wisconsin’s Director of Research and Message Development.
Scot graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in English. He also earned an MA from the George Washington University.
