InfoWilliam Julian has the distinction of being perhaps the last man appointed to the post of Treasurer of the United States. All Treasurers since Julian have been women.

Graduated from Dodds College in Frankfort, Kentucky in 1888. He engaged in the shoe manufacturing business in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1893 as a partner with Franklin Alter and H. Kokenge in the Alter-Julian Co. This company was succeeded in 1906 by the Julian-Kokenge Co. which is still in business in Columbus, Ohio. Mr. Julian was President of the company until 1917 when he retired from its active management. During the first World War, Julian was chairman of the civilian relief committee of the American Red Cross. Julian was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1916. In May, 1933, Julian was appointed Treasurer of the United States by President Franklin Roosevelt. Julian was the U S Treasurer from 1933 until his death on May 29, 1949, in an automobile accident in Bethesda, Maryland.
