Info | Cheryl Baswell Guthrie was born October 27, 1959. She attended Mountain Gap Elementary and Junior High, and graduated from Grissom High School in 1978. She holds a BSBA in Finance and a J.D. with Magna Cum Laude honors. She currently practices law in Huntsville, and has additional experience in security investments, real estate development, and technology.
Guthrie’s father, Avery Baswell, was an engineer with the U.S. Missile Defense Command until his death in 1993. Her mother, Grace deGraffenried Baswell, enjoyed a 20+ year teaching career in Madison County. She is married to retired U.S. Coast Guard Officer Rusty Guthrie, and their son, Rylan, is a high school senior planning to attend Mercer University on an academic scholarship in the fall. The Guthries are members of Willowbrook Baptist Church.
Ms. Guthrie is a member of the Twickenham Republican Women and a former board member for the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra. She currently serves the boards of Huntsville Disaster Relief Command, Diversified Technology Group, and Intuisys.
This is Guthrie’s first run for office, but her Alabama roots run deep. Her grandfather, Edward deGraffenried, represented Alabama in the United States Congress, and other family members have served the State of Alabama since the 1960s.
Her first cousin, William Ryan deGraffenried, Sr.-D (son of former Rep. Edward deGraffenried, Sr.), ran for Governor in 1962, but lost the runoff to former State Rep. George C. Wallace, Jr.
He ran for Governor again in the 1966 primary, but died in a plane crash on February 9, 1966.
William Ryan deGraffenried, Jr.-D served in the State Senate, elected from the 16th District in 1982, and from the 21st District in 1983, 1986, and 1990. In April 1993, when Lt. Gov. James E. Folsom, Jr.-D succeeded the removed Gov. Guy Hunt-R, State Sen. W. Ryan deGraffenried, Jr., D-21 became Lieutenant Governor. Lt. Gov. W. Ryan deGraffenried, Jr.-D ran for Governor in 1994, but lost the primary to former Secretary of State/former Atty. Gen. Donald Eugene "Don" Siegelman-D.
Former Lt. Gov. W. Ryan deGraffenried, Jr.-D died on December 7, 2006.
