InfoAlways recognized as a community-minded representative, Ron MacKinley’s political duties were expanded in April, 2000 when he became Leader of the Opposition. With his new role came the position of Chair of the Public Accounts Committee as well as a seat on all other Legislative Committees.

First elected in a byelection in December, 1985, Ron has been returned to Province House by the voters in his district in every election since. His most recent victory, in the election of September, 2003, was among his most decisive.

He presently serves as the Opposition Critic for Transportation and Public Works, Agriculture, Forestry, Fisheries and Aquaculture. He also serves on a number of Legislative Committees, including the Chair of the Standing Committee on Public Accounts and membership on the Standing Committee on Agriculture, Forestry and Environment.

A partner in MacKinley Brothers beef farm with his mother and his son, Jamie, Ron also owns and operates MacKinley Farms, specializing in potatoes and grain, as well as a farm custom service.

Ron also has a lengthy record of community involvement. He has been vice-chair of the Elliot River CIC, a director of the P.E.I. Federation of Agriculture and of the P.E.I. Farm Centre. He is a former member of the Canadian Horticultural Council Labour Board and Uniform Legislation Board, as well as a former Queens County Chair for the P.E.I. Potato Producers' Association.

He lives in Cornwall with his wife Ann. They have three children, Jamie (Shauna & daughter Alexa), Joanne (Eddie & daughter Lauren) Curran and Jeff.
