Info | Dr. Selden E. Spencer of Huxley has served the Fourth District and its people since 1990. Through his work as a neurologist with the physician-owned McFarland Clinic, the largest multi-specialty medical clinic in central Iowa, Dr. Spencer has maintained offices and clinics and conducted grand rounds and consultations in Iowa Falls, Marshalltown, Jefferson, Lake City, Decorah, and Eldora, as well as his base clinic in Ames. Now, in addition to tending to his patients' medical needs, he has decided to address the security and economic health of the Fourth District.
Dr. Spencer has a lifelong connection to the Midwest. He was born in Freeport, Illinois, and at the age of six moved with his family to Cleveland Heights, Ohio, where he graduated from high school. After attaining a Bachelor of Arts degree at Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania, he attended medical school at the University of North Dakota at Grand Forks, graduating in 1978.
His postgraduate training took him first to Stockton, California, then to Washington University in St. Louis, where he attained Board certification in Psychiatry and Neurology. In St. Louis he met his future wife, Jean, who was an intern. Jean, who was born in Des Moines, introduced him to life in Iowa, and the couple moved first to Iowa City, where he served on the faculty of the University of Iowa. They settled in central Iowa in 1990. She is currently a pediatric ophthalmologist in West Des Moines; they have three children. He has served on the board of Story County Habitat for Humanity, and has been a youth leader and deacon at Collegiate Presbyterian Church in Ames.
Dr. Spencer says he's enjoyed his travels in Iowa so much he's reluctant to make a change. "It's a pleasure seeing people in their own communities. Providing service locally has been a mainstay of my practice, and I think it's benefited myself as well as my patients. They don't have to travel to receive medical care, and I love being out in the countryside of central Iowa. During harvest season, when it's around sundown and folks are still out working in their fields, it's like the rhapsody of America."
