Info | Wilbur MacDonald was born at Orwell, Prince Edward Island, on September 13, 1933, the son of the late Leo R. and Helen MacDonald. He was educated at Orwell Public School and St. Dunstan's High School.
Mr. MacDonald was elected to the House of Commons in May 1979. He served on committees in Agriculture, Fisheries and Regional Industrial Expansion. Mr. MacDonald was a member of the National Beef Import Committee in 1979, representing the Maritime Provinces and Chairman of the PEI Land Use Commission in 1980.
In 1982 he was elected to the Provincial Legislature, representing Fourth Queens, and was selected chairman of the Progressive Conservative caucus. He was chairman of the Legislative Committees on Agriculture, Fisheries, Tourism and Industry in 1983-84. On November 27, 1984, he was appointed Minister of Industry. Mr. MacDonald was re-elected in the general election in 1986 and served as Opposition Critic of Department of Industry. In 1996 he was elected to represent District 6, Belfast-Pownal Bay, and was re-elected in 2000 and 2003.
In 1997 he became the first Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island to be elected to that position, which he held for three years. Mr. MacDonald is the currently the Chair of the Standing Committee on Agriculture, Forestry and Environment, is a member of the Standing Committee on Public Accounts, the Standing Committee on Social Development, the Strategic Planning Committee on Economic Policy, and serves as the MLA representative on the Master Trust Fund.
Mr. MacDonald is active in community work. He is a director of the Orwell Corner Museum, serves as the Executive Director of the Caledonia Club of Prince Edward Island and is past president and director of the Sir Andrew Macphail Foundation. In 2002, he served as a member of the Project Committee for the 200th anniversary of Selkirk Settlers which was celebrated in 2003. He has been actively involved in various farm organizations, the 4-H movement, was a charter member of the PEI Crop and Soil Association, former president of NFU Local 103, and is a member of the PEI Federation of Agriculture.
Mr. MacDonald is a former trustee of the Vernon River Consolidated School and is a current member of the PEI Right to Life Association. He is a charter member and past president of the Vernon River Lions Club and of the Vernon River Knights of Columbus. He was a member of the National Parole Board from 1990-93.
Mr. MacDonald and his wife, Pauline, have nine children and thirteen grandchildren. They own and operate a beef farm at Orwell Cove, PEI.
