Info | Seattle Municipal Court and King County Superior Court judge, named to the state Supreme Court in 1988 and served until 2003. On each of these courts, Smith was the first African-American to serve. Smith became a de facto Republican when working in the office of Charles O. Carroll, then King County's prosecuting attorney. However, he had also helped with Robert F. Kennedy's 1964 campaign for the US Senate and from that point Smith did not personally identify with a political party.
