Info | As a long-time opponent of the Iraq war and occupation, Winograd was instrumental in getting an anti-war resolution passed at last year's California Democratic Convention and worked with Assemblyman Paul Koretz to draft a resolution calling for a moratorium on depleted uranium weapons systems. Playing a leadership role to protect our vote, Winograd helped establish the California Election Protection network, a grassroots organization that successfully lobbied for State Senator Debra Bowen's bill requiring a paper trail for electronic voting recounts. In her position as Media Reform Chair of the Progressive Caucus of the California Democratic Party, Winograd hosts "They Say/We Say" -- a public access televsion show which highlights the plight of returning veterans and underscores the importance of citizen activism.
Previously, Winograd managed the 2004 Democratic Club Headquarters in Santa Monica, where five local Democratic Clubs converged to get out the vote. As manager, Winograd supervised voter registration outreach, swing state trips, phone banking, precinct walking, letter writing campaigns, and Kerry vs. Bush debate analysis sessions. As a result of her outstanding efforts to support Democratic candidates such as Assemblywoman Fran Pavley, Senator Barbara Boxer, and Congressman Henry Waxman, Winograd received an "LA County Democrat of the Year" award, signed by numerous lawmakers both in Washington DC and California.
As a National Board Certified teacher and literacy expert, Winograd coached teachers at Wilmington Middle School, Flemining Middle School, Marina Del Rey Middle school and elsewhere in the 36th Congressional District. Working with non-profits committed to closing the achievement gap, Winograd trained teachers, principals, and school superintendents in standards-based education and team leadership skills, always stressing the importance of holding high expectations for all students. During the last few years, Winograd has worked as an education consultant and professional developer for the state of California, as well as the federally-funded GEAR UP program, which gears up struggling middle schoolers for college. Travelling with a People-To-People teacher delegation to China during the spy-plane stare-down, Winograd worked to promote dialogue between teachers in China and educators in the United States and was a featured speaker at a US-Chinese education conference in Beijing.
