Info | Delegate to the 1970 Illinois Constitutional Convention, from Western Springs, Illinois and founder and president of the Illinois Federation of Retail Associations, which became the Illinois Retail Merchants Association in 1957. Graduated from Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa in 1924 and worked for a time as a school teacher and coach. From 1931 until 1939 he was editor of the Illinois Journal of Commerce and a member and president of the American Association of Retail Executives. He ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. Senate in 1954. Meek was active on many civic and governmental committees including the Illinois Council on Economic Education Committee, the Illinois Revenue Study Commission, the Status of Women Commission, the Board of Directors of the Better Business Bureau of Greater Chicago, the Citizens for Day Care, Inc., and Family Financial Debt Counseling Service. In 1969 he was supported by the Chicago Tribune and the Better Government Association in his campaign as delegate to the Constitutional Convention. He was elected from the ninth district and served on the Rules Committee and the Revenue Committee. He was a supporter of Sam Witwer, whom he nominated for convention president. Meek and his wife, Margaret, had three children, Joseph Jr., Judith and Julia.
