Info | LATIMER, Henry, a Representative and a Senator from Delaware; born in Newport, Del., on April 24, 1752; pursued classical studies; studied medicine in Philadelphia, Pa., graduated from the University of Pennsylvania at Philadelphia in 1773 and from the Edinburgh (Scotland) Medical College in 1775; returned to the United States and practiced his profession in Wilmington, Del.; served as a surgeon in the Revolutionary War; member, State house of representatives 1787-1788, 1790, serving as speaker in 1790; successfully contested the election of John Patton to the Third Congress and served from February 14, 1794, until February 7, 1795, when he resigned; elected in 1795 as a Federalist to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of George Read; reelected, and served from February 7, 1795, until February 28, 1801, when he resigned; died in Philadelphia, Pa., December 19, 1819; interment in the Presbyterian Cemetery, Wilmington, Del.
