Info | Summit County Fiscal Officer John A. Donofrio is responsible for the collecting of Real Estate Taxes on all properties in Summit County. The Treasurer's Division mails real estate tax bills semi-annually. There are 78 tax districts with approximately 260,000 tax bills mailed each collection. The Fiscal Officer is responsible for investing and safeguarding over $800 million a year.
Donofrio is Chairman of the Summit County Investment Board. He is also a member of the Board of Control and the Board of Revision, which hears appeals from taxpayers regarding property values.
During his tenure as County Treasurer, John has strived to make his office more efficient, effective and responsive to the needs of real estate taxpayers by introducing and implementing new and innovative tax collection programs. He has been a forerunner in the State of Ohio for his development of the Real Estate Tax Assistance Program, the Real Estate Tax Escrow Program, the Delinquent Tax Payment Program, the Donofrio Linked Deposit Program and the Real Estate Discount Program. His accomplishments and these national award-winning initiatives are second to none.
As a former President of the Ohio Treasurer's Association and the former State Director of the National Association of Treasurers and Finance Officers, John knows how to handle leadership roles. He has been a leader in making changes which have set the standard for treasury management throughout the State of Ohio.
John Donofrio is the only County Treasurer in Ohio who gave Real Estate taxpayers a discount on their property taxes. He is the only County Treasurer who reduced the interest rate on bank loans for qualified businesses to 3% below the current borrowing rate and was the first County Treasurer to provide monthly payments for delinquent taxes and to offer monthly budgeting for current taxes. These programs will continue in the Treasurer's Division of the Fiscal Office.
First appointed to the Summit County Treasurer's Office in 1979, John won election to his first term in 1980 and has been re-elected in 1984, 1988, 1992, 1996 and 2000. John was officially sworn in as Summit County's first Fiscal Officer on June 17, 2002.
John, age 54, resides in Akron with his wife Marijean. They have five grown children and two grandchildren. John served three years in the U.S. Air Force and was honorably discharged.
