| Info | Stephen. R. Speed, a Dover native, was first elected to City Council in 2001. After serving a two-year term, he ran for a second term and was sworn in again as 1st District Councilman in 2003. After serving one year, he gave up his seat to run for Dover's Mayor. He defeated five opponents and will complete his two-year term as Mayor in 2006.
After graduation from Dover High School in 1981, Mayor Speed entered the U.S. Naval Academy where he received his B.S. degree in 1985. He continued his education at the Florida Institute of Technology where he received his M.B.A. in 1993. He served as an Active Duty Navy Officer from 1985 - 1994 and is currently a Commander in the Navy Reserve. From 1994 - 2004 he was self-employed as a realtor with Harrington ERA, but relinquished that position upon his mayoral election.
Other affiliations include St. Andrew's Lutheran Church, where he served as Congregation and Council President from 1998 - 2002, United States Naval Academy (U.S.N.A.) Alumni Association Lifetime Member, U.S.N.A. Blue & Gold (1999 Officer of the Year for the State of Delaware), American Heart Association Affair of the Heart Volunteer (1995 - 2000 and 2004), Campus Community School PTA and CDSA Soccer Coach.
He and his wife, Lori, have two daughters, Shannon and Skyler.
